Its main function is not only to cover and protect the steerer tube but also to apply the necessary pressure to preload the headset.

When you tighten the bolt in the top cap, the fork is pushed upward through the steerer tube via the stem and spacers. This eliminates any play in the bearings. Beyond this function, the top cap is also an excellent detail for adding a personal touch.
