Shimano SM-CS50 Cable Stops for Steel Frames
Available in stock (14)
Do you have an older road or touring bike with downtube shifters and want to convert it to modern shifters or a newer mechanical groupset? Shimano SM-CS50 is the small part that lets you use the frame’s existing downtube shifter mounts as cable stops instead. This means you can keep the classic steel frame while routing the shift cables onward to, for example, modern integrated brake and shift levers on the handlebars.
SM-CS50 mounts directly to the brazed-on downtube shifter mounts. The integrated cable adjusters also make it possible to fine-tune shifting where the cable housing ends. It is a simple and neat solution when restomodding an old road bike, randonneur or touring bike whose frame is still worth building on, but where you want to leave traditional downtube shifters behind.
This is the version for traditionally built frames with a round downtube and brazed-on downtube shifter mounts—something commonly found on older steel frames. If the frame does not have these mounts, SM-CS50 is not the right solution. They also work well if you are building with thumb shifters or bar-end shifters and need a proper cable stop on the frame. Brother Cycles Mr Wooden is a modern example of a frame that uses the same type of mounts, where SM-CS50 is needed if you choose shifters other than traditional downtube shifters.
It is worth keeping in mind that the cable stops only solve the cable routing from the frame to modern mechanical shifters. If you are converting an older road bike to a more modern groupset, you still need to check that components including the rear hub, cassette, rear derailleur, crankset and the frame’s rear dropout spacing are compatible with the drivetrain you intend to use. But if you have already resolved the compatibility issues, it is often just a pair of small cable stops like these that are missing to make the build work as intended.
SM-CS50 is sold as a pair and supplied complete with screws. Weight is approximately 24 grams including the screws. We generally have considerably more small Shimano parts in the workshop than on the website, but we chose to stock these in particular because we believe they are becoming increasingly difficult to find. A fairly insignificant component until you are standing with a fine old steel frame and want to convert it from downtube shifters to a more modern mechanical drivetrain.

Build your custom dream bicycle with us
Consultation meeting
At the first step in the process, we would like to discuss with you what kind of bicycle you are looking for, and what budget you have. It is best if we arrange a meeting for this, either in the shop or online.
Quote
After a paid deposit or purchase of a frame set, we send you a detailed quote. At this stage, there is still every opportunity to adjust the choice of parts.
The bicycle is assembled
Now things are starting to happen! The quote is finalized. We order components and put everything together ahead of the build. Depending on your choice of parts, it takes different amounts of time to assemble the bike, but two weeks from approved quote is usually enough.
The bicycle is ready for delivery
You are welcome to collect your custom bicycle. We also offer shipping to all corners of the world. From our initial meeting, we have taken your measurements so that you sit correctly on the bicycle. Before handing it over, we make small adjustments together with you and, if desired, go through how to adjust and take care of the bicycle. Happy riding! =)
