Frame preparation

When buying a steel frame, it is easy to focus on the big decisions: frame model, color, wheels, drivetrain and how the bike will be used. But before the build begins, there is some less visible work that makes a big difference to how well the parts fit from the start.

With our frame preparation, we take care of the basic workshop work before the frame is shipped or built up. We inspect the bottom bracket shell and steerer tube to ensure the bottom bracket and headset have clean, properly finished contact surfaces. This is especially relevant for steel frames, where paint, surface treatments or small manufacturing residues can otherwise affect fit and installation.

The service includes chasing the threads in the bottom bracket shell* as well as reaming and facing the steerer tube. If you also buy a compatible headset and/or bottom bracket from us, we can install it as part of the work, using the correct press and tools for each component.

*If the frame is to be used with a bottom bracket that requires flat, parallel contact surfaces, such as external bearing cups, we can also face the ends of the bottom bracket shell. If so, let us know when placing your order. Facing the bottom bracket shell is not otherwise included as standard.

We do not cut the steerer tube as part of this service. This is because different stems and cockpit setups have different heights, known as "stack height", so the length should be decided only once the rest of the build is complete.
