Cycling with a backpack is convenient and provides more even weight distribution than a classic messenger bag. The difference may not be huge, since the weight is still on your back while you ride, but if you do a lot of walking, a backpack may be a more versatile option.

One difference between backpacks specifically designed for cycling and more traditional outdoor backpacks is how high they sit on your back:. Cycling-specific backpacks sit lower on your back, so you won’t hit your bike helmet against the backpack.  Classic backpacks often sit higher on your back, which can make them uncomfortable  in a more active cycling position.
