Chris King NoThreadSet Headset 1-1/8" - Matte Mango
Out of stock
Chris King NoThreadSet 1 1/8" is a classic external headset for frames with a 34 mm head tube and a straight 1 1/8" fork. The standard is EC34/28.6 at the top and EC34/30 at the bottom, meaning a traditional threadless headset with external bearing cups both above and below the head tube. It is the right Chris King model for older and modern frames that still use this simple and proven standard—not for tapered forks or frames with integrated or semi-integrated headsets.
NoThreadSet is one of the components Chris King has built its reputation on. The bearings are manufactured by Chris King themselves in Portland and use serviceable angular-contact bearings with matched steel bearing races. The idea is not to replace the entire headset when it starts running roughly, but to open, clean, lubricate, and continue using it. This is an important difference from many simpler headsets, where the bearings are effectively treated as consumables.
The 1 1/8" version uses Chris King's GripLock system, which separates bearing adjustment from clamping around the steerer tube. The design helps the headset maintain the correct preload even when the bike is ridden hard and the surface is rough. The relatively high stack—17.7 mm at the top and 13.7 mm at the bottom—is also worth checking if you are building a frame where stem height or the available length of the steerer tube is critical.
The most important thing before purchasing is to check the complete standard. The frame must be designed for EC34 both at the top and bottom, and the fork must have a straight 1 1/8" steerer with a 30 mm crown race seat. If you have the right frame and fork, NoThreadSet is still one of the obvious choices when you want a serviceable 1 1/8" headset that can stay with the bike for a very long time.
