Chrome Metropolis is the legendary, extra-roomy big sibling of Citizen—the messenger bag for anyone who actually needs to carry a lot. The model has its roots in the bike messenger culture that made Chrome famous around the world and was relaunched in a limited 30th-anniversary edition. With a 40-liter capacity, there’s room for a change of clothes, groceries, work gear, and the day’s deliveries without having to treat every centimeter like a game of Tetris.

Metropolis builds on what made the original so popular with bike messengers: a large, open main compartment that is quick to access and a shoulder strap that lets you rotate the bag to the front without taking it off. On this anniversary version, the padded strap can be adjusted for carrying over either the right or left shoulder, while the stabilizer strap keeps the bag more securely in place when you ride. The classic Chrome buckle makes it quick to remove the bag and can also be replaced with other compatible Chrome buckles.

The outer shell is made from durable 1050D recycled nylon, while the inside uses a red 500D TPE tarp liner that provides solid protection from rain and dirt. The construction has a simple wet/dry separation to keep wet gear apart from the rest of your load. This is a genuinely weather-resistant bike messenger bag, but because it closes with a large flap rather than a welded rolltop, we wouldn’t treat it as a completely sealed dry bag.

At the front, there is a dedicated U-lock slot and a zippered pocket for tools, keys, and other small items you want to reach quickly. Reflective details on the straps provide extra visibility when light hits them. The main compartment is primarily designed for large, unrestricted packing capacity rather than lots of small organizational pockets, and there is no padded laptop pocket—if you carry a laptop, we recommend using a separate sleeve.

40 liters is a lot for a messenger bag, and it is also the most important difference compared with Citizen. Metropolis is not the model for someone who only needs to carry a laptop, jacket, and lunch to work; in that case, a smaller messenger bag is more convenient. It is for anyone who appreciates the quick access of a classic bike messenger bag and will actually use the large capacity. If you regularly carry very heavy loads, a backpack distributes the weight better across both shoulders, but for large, changing loads that need to be loaded and unloaded quickly, Metropolis remains a very distinctive bag.
