Dia-Compe ENE Thumb Shifter is a right-side thumb shifter with friction shifting for 11-speed drivetrains, perfect for those who want full control over their rear derailleur.

We often talk about “being one with the bike” when riding fixed gear, but there’s a trick to getting some of the same feeling on a geared bike: friction shifters. It could hardly get simpler or more reliable.

Dia-Compe ENE Thumb Shifter mounts directly to the handlebar and controls the rear derailleur entirely through friction. There are no fixed clicks determining where the gears are positioned—you move the shifter yourself until the chain runs quietly and precisely. The Power Ratchet mechanism provides clear resistance in the lever, and after a while the gear positions become ingrained in your muscle memory. It requires a little from you, but you’ll be rewarded in the long run.

With its solid metal construction, this is a shifter that won’t let you down. For gravel, touring, bikepacking, long-distance riding, or other bike builds where simplicity and ease of maintenance take priority over proprietary shifting systems, this is the one to get. If you want to break free from the major manufacturers’ compatibility charts, a friction shifter is the perfect solution.

Compatibility and installation

Dia-Compe specifies the shifter for up to 11-speed cassettes and most mechanical rear derailleurs. Since shifting takes place through friction, the shifter does not need to match a specific indexing system or cable-pull ratio. The rear derailleur must, however, still be able to handle the cassette’s largest sprocket and total capacity.

The cable travel may also be sufficient for many 12-speed drivetrains, but 12-speed setups are outside Dia-Compe’s official specifications and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

The standard clamp is 26 mm, but with the included shims, the shifter can also be mounted on handlebars with diameters of 23.8 mm and 22.2 mm.
